Student’s exchange: Bulgaria 2017

Sofia, Bulgaria, 27th March – 31st March 2017

The Bulgarian school was the host for the Erasmus + student exchange program, which happened in the end of March 2017 in Sofia, Bulgaria. The students learned a lot of new things with their new friends, and visited interesting places.

They worked in two groups with felting and glass. The activities were very unique and linked with Bulgarian culture.  In the glass workshop they learned about its properties, colors and the technical side of working with the material. There were guests do a special workshop that taught the students how to make beads made from colored glass using burners.

In the felting workshop the students learned about the two ways of working with felt- wet felting that uses several layers of wool and soap water, and needle felting- which can be done on dry wool by using a needle to attach two or more colors and create 3D images. They used silk and made stunning flowers, necklaces, brooches and bracelets.

The exchange in Bulgaria was a great experience for improving cultural awareness, expanding my knowledge about foreign cultures and meeting new people. I really liked that we participated in workshops and activities we usually don’t encounter in our school. We aquired a new set of skills in working with previously unknown materials. Even though our days were filled with activities, time flew. I enjoyed having dinner all together at various restaurants. Sometimes we struggled to make compromises as a group because everyone had their own desires but we have improved throughout the week. For me the hardest thing was flying so early in the morning.

I experienced the exchange as a very positive experience where we all spent a good week for which I didn’t regret that I attended. Basically, there were organized two workshops, but I liked the glass workshop more, because you do not have the opportunity every day to try working with glass. Of course, it was generally very interesting to visit a foreign country in which I haven’t been before and we could get to know their way of life at least a little bit. We also saw the way they work at another school at which they are particularly interesting and different educational direction. We also got along well with the other students, and we had a great time. I think that everyone would love to go on a trip like this again.

With this kind of exchanges students, in my opinion, learn a lot. Before we left, I was told that we were going to work with felting wool and glass in the workshop. Techniques that I have never worked with before. I was surprised how much I liked the technique of felting with wool. Teachers who shared their knowledge and experience of the crafts with us thought us a lot. The experience revealed to me new horizons for handling with materials in retrospect I’m sure that the workshops bring a lot of new knowledge to the participants. The whole experience, in addition to many new skills with designing with different materials, also give me experience in communication with people while I discovered an entirely new culture and in general expanded my horizons. In addition to countless memories, and knowledge of Bulgaria I left with many new friendships which are in addition to knowledge other fondest memory of Bulgaria.

The exchange in Sofia was amazing. The workshops were very interesting. The workshop with glass was very interesting because we had the first opportunity to work with it. Safety and everything was very well taken care of, the instructions were clear, the teachers were always willing to help. I liked that we had no problems with communication. I am really happy with how my work has turned out. I’m already familiar with the felting with wool technique but I was still very fond of the workshop because we got to know the various processes of producing wool, which we were not familiar with yet. The teacher, who was the leader of this workshop was very friendly and was always ready to assist in the making. The students were incredibly friendly and happily shown us around the city. They have always been willing to help us, explain or show us things we didn’t understand or just wanted to hear about. They also showed us around their school which was really nice. Their school has a somewhat different way of working and offers a variety of different programs which was interesting to see since our school is a bit different. I really liked that we could also see their classes and the projects they were making. I think it was all a very interesting experience. The fact that we had the opportunity to learn about their school, its programs and methods of work is truly exceptional. I loved Sofia and the trip to the Rila monastery was great. I am very glad that I had the possibility of attending and that we had the chance to met so many new people. The exchange was really exceptional.
